Ballet Barre

Ballet Barre

This is an essential exercise aimed at refining the technique of transferring weight between feet while emphasising the importance of rolling through the metatarsals. This exercise, performed at the barre, combines elegance with the precision required for sur la pointe work, making it important for students' development in ballet training.

Preparation:

Ensure students are positioned correctly at the barre with adequate space to perform ballottés without obstruction. The starting leg should be in dégagé derrière with the opposite hand on the barre for balance.

Steps:

1. Have students begin with four slow ballottés, focusing on the fluid transfer of weight from one foot to the other. Encourage students to use their upper body gracefully to complement the movement.

2. Transition into a pas de bourrée piqué dessous, maintaining precision and poise.

3. Have students execute courru, moving towards the barre to prepare for the change of sides. This should be a swift, controlled transition.

4. Cue students to adjust their right leg into retiré devant, coordinating with port de bras to 4th position. This moment is critical for balance and alignment.

5. Incorporate a cambré to add fluidity and stretch, followed by recovery and a dégagé of the right leg derrière.

6. Prompt students to repeat the sequence on the alternate side, ensuring both sides receive equal practice.

Focus:

Highlight the importance of rolling through the metatarsals during ballottés for foot health and technique. Remind students to maintain their posture and alignment, particularly when transitioning between movements.
