This exercise reinforces the importance of pelvic stability and alignment. This exercise not only enhances a graceful technique, but also fosters an understanding of how the pelvis's positioning directly influences a dancer's balance, posture, and overall performance in ballet –– particularly within the Progressing Ballet Technique program.
Preparation: Begin with a partially inflated fusion ball, ensuring it is ¾ full. Position the dancers with their legs externally rotated and on demi-pointe, heels close together, on the fusion ball.
Steps:
1. Have dancers start with their arms relaxed at their sides, then lift the arms sideways while raising the head and gaze, ensuring the torso remains elongated without rib flare.
2. Instruct on the sequential lowering of arms, followed by a dynamic movement to transition into an open 4th position, emphasising pelvic and shoulder girdle stability.
3. Lead dancers into a cambré with palms downward, recovering to the initial position with an undulating port de bras.
4. Repeat this sequence on the opposite side.
5. Introduce circular port de bras transitions into arabesque epaulement for both right and left sides, maintaining steady, natural breathing.
6. Repeat from the beginning on the opposite side.
Focus: Stress the importance of maintaining pelvic stability and alignment. Have dancers avoid sinking into the fusion ball, and ensure they maintain a neutral chin position.
