Exercise Ball / Fit Ball
This exercise is designed to reinforce correct alignment when students are in an attitude devant position. Double check their pelvis and foot placement, paying special attention to dropped heels (sickle foot). This exercise is vital for developing balance, alignment, and strength in the supporting leg, crucial aspects of ballet technique.
Preparation: Have the students stand behind their fit ball with the right foot placed on the centre of the ball, heel lifted in an attitude devant position. Start with the port de bras in 3rd position. Check that the students' hips remain square and the supporting leg is engaged. The supporting foot can commence on demi pointe or fully stretched as both positions have value as part of their training.
Steps:
1. Encourage students to stabilise their position during the introduction, feeling the alignment. If the fit ball moves, it indicates that the hips are swinging out of alignment.
2. As they fondu, guide students to breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth in time with the music. Remind them to check that their knees are moving over their toes.
3. After they are secure, they can raise the working leg and set up on the alternate side.
Focus:Stress the importance of keeping the hips square and the supporting leg engaged. Watch for any pronation of the supporting foot.
