This exercise focuses on maximising the students' rotational ability, a fundamental part of ballet training. It is essential for stability, mobility, and overall strength in ballet movements.
Preparation:• Have students lie on a mat with a fit ball positioned for knee support. If any students have hyperextended knees, they should make doubly sure that their knees are on the ball.
Steps:
1. Start with feet in parallel and dorsiflexion.
2. Ensure students' necks are elongated, gazing upwards.
3. Arms should be relaxed by their sides.
4. Guide them through the bridge position, checking they maintain proper alignment through the movement.
5. Have them transition between plantar and dorsiflexion.
6. Have them lower back down and move into a turnout position. Emphasise leg rotation from the hips while maintaining breathing in sync with the music.
7. Repeat this sequence four times, focusing on controlled movements and alignment. Only when they are secure try the port de bras in first position.
Alignment and Technique Focus: Pay close attention to hip, rib, femur, and tibia alignment.
