Ballet Barre

Ballet Barre

This exercise is designed to build the foundational strength and alignment necessary for pointe work. It is crucial that this exercise is introduced only after a student has undergone a thorough pointe readiness assessment by a qualified dance physiotherapist. This enchaînement emphasises the importance of core stability, leg and foot alignment, and the gradual building of strength in the metatarsals to safely transition to pointe work.

Preparation: Ensure students use a long resistance band and have access to a ballet barre. Have students position the band over the thighs, wrapping it securely but comfortably to facilitate movement without restricting circulation.

Steps:

1. Begin with the students facing the barre, holding the ends of the bands wide on the barre, feet in parallel.

2. Instruct the students to slowly rise through the metatarsals to full pointe, focusing on the engagement of the core and the stability of the legs.

3. Guide students through a controlled lowering to demi-pointe before returning to full pointe, emphasising the smooth transition and alignment.

4. Encourage a repeat of the lowering and rising, ensuring consistent control and precision.

5. Have students conclude with rolling back through the metatarsals to a flat-foot position on the floor before repeating the sequence.

6. Have students incorporate leg rotation into the sequence to challenge balance and strength further.

Focus: Emphasise the importance of maintaining correct leg and foot alignment throughout the exercise to prevent injury and promote effective strength building.
