Ballet Barre

This exercise is designed to refine students understanding and execution of weight transference and articulation through the metatarsals, starting at the barre and progressing into the centre. This exercise emphasises the fluidity and precision required for ballet, particularly in pointe work, by integrating complex movements with coordinated port de bras, head, and eye line movements.

Preparation: Have students begin with the left foot devant in a preparatory position en croix (classical pose), ensuring students are correctly aligned and balanced for the commencement of the exercise.

Steps:

1. Introduce the sequence with a step into the preparatory position en croix, focusing on establishing a strong, balanced foundation.

2. Guide students through 3 posé passé, emphasising coordination of port de bras, head, and eye line to enhance expressiveness and control.

3. Have students transition into a posé sur la pointe in cou-de-pied (coupé) derrière, with port de bras in 4th position, highlighting the importance of precision in foot placement and arm movement.

4. Instruct students to join sur la pointe, reinforcing the need for seamless transitions between movements.

5. Cue 3 petit pas de bourée piqués, focusing on articulation and fluidity in the footwork.

6. Have students conclude the 3rd petit pas de bourée piqué in preparatory position en croix, preparing for the sequence to be repeated on the alternate side.

7. Have students repeat the entire sequence, ensuring students practice equally on both sides for balanced development.

Focus: Emphasise the importance of maintaining correct alignment and technique throughout the exercise, especially during weight transfers and metatarsal articulation, to prevent injury and promote graceful movements.
