Ballet Barre

This basic exercise aims to improve students' turnout proprioception in a Demi Plié. The assistance of the wrapping of the legs will assist them to feel the external rotation equally on both sides of the body.

Preparation: Using a resistance band that is 3m (10 ft) in length, students sit down and place the band across their thighs, ensuring it is centred. Siting to one side, wrap the band around the top of the thighs in an outward direction allowing each wrap to slightly overlap. The wrapping process is repeated for the other leg, the student stands up holding both sides of the band.

Steps:

1. Students start at the ballet barre with the band placed over, wider than their body span.

2. Position the hands on the band.

3. They execute 3 demi pliés, checking that they don't pronate their feet.

4. Followed by a battement tendu to second and lower the heel. Check that they transfer the weight distribution onto their supporting leg and transfer into the centre of both legs in second position.

5. Repeat the 3 demi pliés in second position, pointe the right foot while ensure the weight placement is upheld and close back into first position.

6. Repeat on the alternate side.

Focus: Pay attention to the students' hip alignment and stability in your ankles.
