Fusion Ball

Fusion Ball

This exercise aims to teach young dancers the basics of maintaining proper posture and alignment, with a specific focus on stability in the pelvic and lumbar spine areas. Developing a strong foundation in this aspect is crucial for improving leg flexibility and overall ballet technique.

Preparation: Start by having the student sit upright on a mat, positioning their feet at the centre of the fusion ball while keeping their stance parallel. If required they can roll the back of the mat or use a rolled up towel to sit them a little higher. Adjust the ball underneath their calf muscles if they are hyperextended in the knees.

Steps:

1. Guide the student elongate their spine, using the analogy of puppet strings attached to their head and hip bones to create an uplifted and aligned position.

2. Legs are brought toward their body slowly for three counts while focusing on maintaining an elongated posture.

3. On count four, they rotate their legs naturally into turnout.

4. Legs straighten on counts five to seven, paying attention to gentle rotation.

5. The legs return back to a parallel position with extended toes.

Focus: Be careful the student doesn't curl their toes in this exercise.
